REACH is the new European Chemicals Law and stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals.
REACH came into force on June 1, 2007 and replaces the previous chemical legislation in the European Union (EU). The main aims of REACH are to ensure the high level of protection of human health and the environment. The legislator also wishes to promote alternative test methods and strengthen the innovativeness and competitiveness of the EU.
Under REACH, the manufacturer and/or importer bears more responsibility than before for evaluating the use specific risk presented by chemicals and for providing users with pertinent safety information.
REACH, the new EU chemicals regulation, requires that chemical substances on their own, in preparations and those which are intentionally released from articles have to be registered to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The regulation applies to substances manufactured in, or imported to the EU in annual quantities of 1 tonne or more per company, unless the regulation indicates otherwise.
The obligation to register applies from 1 June 2008. The chemicals currently on the EU market which meet the definition of phase-in substances should be pre-registered between 1 June and 1 December 2008. Companies who pre-register their substances can benefit from extended registration deadlines. The deadline depends on the tonnage band and the hazardous properties of the substance. The staggered deadlines are:
30 November 2010,
31 May 2013 or
31 May 2018
ORGANİK KİMYA and REACH
ORGANİK KİMYA is committed to and fully supports the goals of REACH. The polymer and copolymer products of Organik Kimya are considered as “Polymer” under REACH. A Polymer cannot be registered under the Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, they are exempted, but the individual substances composing the polymer shall be registered.
Please be assured that Organik Kimya will continue the registration processes necessary for our products, and timely complete them by the due dates set by volume according to the REACH legislations. Our registration process will focus on the base monomers of our polymer products and we are in contact with all suppliers in order to follow up the registration of the substances used in polymer products.
REACH registration deadlines for individual substances composing the polymer differ according to the annual production amounts of our upstream suppliers, monomers have been registered by our suppliers at the end of November 2010.
The registration of the other ingredients will be followed by Organik Kimya. The registration will be done by the end of May 2013 and May 2018 according to their annual amounts.
